Three tiers, three very different projects
A "kitchen remodel" can mean almost anything. A $15K cosmetic refresh (new counters, faucet, hardware, paint) and a $150K full gut with custom cabinetry, layout changes, and high-end appliances are both "kitchen remodels" — but they share almost nothing in terms of work, timeline, or risk. We bucket projects into three tiers to keep expectations realistic: Refresh ($15-25K), Mid-range ($35-75K), and Premium ($90K+).
Refresh tier ($15-25K)
What you get: new countertops (often quartz overlay or butcher block), new faucet and fixtures, refinished or repainted cabinets, new hardware, fresh paint, possibly new lighting. What you don't get: layout changes, new appliances, structural work, new flooring, new cabinet boxes. Timeline: 1-2 weeks. When this tier makes sense: your layout works, your cabinets are in good shape, you just want a visual update.
Mid-range tier ($35-75K) — the sweet spot
What you get: full demo to studs, new cabinetry (semi-custom or quality stock), quartz or granite counters, new appliances (mid-range brands like Bosch, KitchenAid), new flooring, new lighting, possible layout reconfiguration within the existing footprint. What you don't get: structural wall removal, custom inset cabinetry, high-end appliance packages (Sub-Zero, Wolf), major electrical upgrades. Timeline: 6-10 weeks. When this tier makes sense: your layout is mostly fine but your finishes are dated; you want a kitchen that functions well and looks great for the next 10-15 years.
Premium tier ($90K+)
What you get: full demo + structural modifications (load-bearing wall removal, beam installation), custom cabinetry (inset face frames, custom drawers, integrated panels), high-end appliance package, premium surfaces (natural stone, exotic wood), full electrical/lighting redesign, smart home integration, possible floor plan reconfiguration. Timeline: 10-16 weeks. When this tier makes sense: you're doing a whole-home remodel and the kitchen is part of a larger change; you want magazine-quality finish; you plan to age in place.
Where the money goes (typical mid-range)
For a $50K kitchen remodel in Louisville: cabinetry ~$15K (30%), countertops ~$6K (12%), appliances ~$8K (16%), labor ~$12K (24%), flooring/paint/misc ~$5K (10%), design/permit ~$2K (4%), contingency ~$2K (4%). The cabinetry line is almost always the biggest variable — going from stock to custom can move your total budget by 50%.
How to keep your kitchen remodel on budget
Three rules: (1) Don't change the layout unless you have to — keeping plumbing and gas lines where they are saves thousands. (2) Choose appliances before you finalize cabinetry — appliance dimensions drive cabinet design, not the other way around. (3) Get every selection locked before demo — every change order after demo starts adds 10-20% to the change cost.
